Why English Teams Struggle in Europe

An argument can be made that the English Premier League is the best league in the world. Recently though, they have not performed well in Europe (the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League). Why is this? I believe one reason is EPL teams spend so much energy on trying to qualify for next years European competitions, that when the time comes for them to play in the current tournaments, they’re exhausted. Meanwhile, in leagues like La Liga, Ligue 1, and the Bundesliga, giants Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and PSG are able to rest their best players because the league opposition isn’t as tough. Therefore it isn’t as difficult for them to qualify for Europe. Lately, there have been talks of the Premier League losing one of their Champions League spots. They will need to start performing if they wish to keep those spots. Teams like Manchester City and Liverpool are showing that it is possible for English clubs to do well in Europe. City are in the semis of the Champions League and Liverpool are in the semis of the Europa League. I guess only time will tell if teams in the EPL will begin to thrive in European competitions.
