Today is Touchline80’s one year anniversary. I want to thank everyone who I have been able to share my passion for football with and I hope that Touchline80 continues to grow for another year.
Here is a brief recap of match day 30’s Premier League action. Manchester City dominated ten men West Brom (Gareth McAuley was sent off in the 2nd minute), with 78% possession and 43 shots. They won the match, 3-0. Gomis netted a goal in the 87th minute to snatch all three points for Swansea City against Aston Villa. Newcastle United came agonizingly close to salvaging a point against Arsenal multiple times in the second half, but in the end lost, 2-1. Southampton beat Burnley, 2-0. Although going 1-0 down to Stoke City in the 14th minute, Crystal Palace won the match, 2-1. Harry Kane lead Tottenham to a 4-3 victory over Leicester, netting a hat-trick, which ties him with Diego Costa for top goalscorer in the EPL (both players have 19 goals). West Ham United beat Sunderland, scoring the only goal of the match in the 88th minute. Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 in one of the biggest rivalries in football; Juan Mata scored both of the Red Devils’ goals. One being a spectacular half bicycle kick. Chelsea had a bit of trouble in their match against Hull City, but managed to win, 3-2 (Hull City had many opportunities to tie the match). Everton won against QPR, 2-1. That’s all for match day 30’s Premier League action.
Here are the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals fixtures:
PSG vs Barcelona
Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid
FC Porto vs Bayern Munich
Juventus vs AS Monaco
Here is a brief recap of the round of 16 second leg UEFA Champions League matches. FC Porto crushed FC Basel, 4-0 (Aggregate* 5-1 Porto). Schalke came extremely close to upsetting Real Madrid, beating them 4-3, but losing 5-4 on aggregate. After drawing with Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg, 0-0, Bayern Munich steamrolled them 7-0. Ten-men (Ibrahimovic was sent off in the 31st minute) PSG tied Chelsea, 2-2, advancing to the Quarter-Finals on away goals (aggregate 3-3 PSG). Atletico Madrid beat Bayer Leverkusen, 1-0, but were tied on aggregate, 1-1, with neither team having an away goal. After extra-time conceded no goals the match went into penalties, which Atletico won, 3-2. Arsenal made a valiant attempt to comeback from their 3-1 first leg defeat to Monaco, but only scored two of the the three goals they needed to advance. Barcelona cruised to a 1-0 victory over Manchester City and if not for Man City’s goalkeeper, Joe Hart, would’ve beaten them by a much larger score (aggregate 3-1 Barcelona). Carlos Tevez lead Juventus to a 3-0 win against Borussia Dortmund, netting two of the goals himself and assisting the other one (aggregate 5-1 Juventus).Well, there is your recap of the second legs of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
*Aggregate is the sum of goals both teams score in the first and second leg. Check out What is the Champions League to learn more about the Champions League. Click the link below to read it.
P.S. The winning team always is put after the scoreline if it is unclear who the winner of the match is in the text. For example if Tottenham beat Arsenal 2-1 I would write, “The scoreline at the end of the match read 2-1 Tottenham.”
Here is a brief recap of match day 29’s Premier League action. Crystal Palace triumphed over QPR, 3-1, scoring all of their goals in the first half. Arsenal crushed West Ham United, 3-0. Leicester drew Hull City who’ll be without Tom Huddlestone because he was sent off in the 72nd minute. Christian Benteke netted a brace as Aston Villa steamrolled struggling Sunderland, 4-0. League leaders, Chelsea, tied Southampton, 1-1. Everton were 3-0 victors over Newcastle United. West Brom beat Stoke City with Brown Ideye scoring the only goal of the match. Burnley shocked Manchester City beating them 1-0. Tottenham were thumped 3-0 by Manchester United and are probably out of the race for a Champions League spot. Liverpool were extremely lucky to beat Swansea with their only goal being a very cheap (lucky) one. That is all for match day 29’s Premier League action.
I can tell Giroud has been working out. “Arggggggh! Check out my meaty French triceps (in one of Arsenal’s previous matches one of the commentators referred to Giroud’s forehead as his meaty french forehead)!”
Here is a brief recap of match day 28’s Premier League action. Although Aston Villa just barely beat West Brom, 2-1, with their second goal coming in the 94th minute off of a penalty, they hit the post once and had shots cleared off the line twice. Hull City tied with Sunderland, 1-1. Sadio Mane netted in the 83rd minute to get a 1-0 win and three points for Southampton against Crystal Palace. Manchester City dominated Leicester City and deservedly won, 2-0. Newcastle United were extremely unlucky to lose to Manchester United. Ashley Young scored the only goal of the game in the 89th minute after a bad mistake by the Magpies’ (Newcastle) defense inside their own box. Newcastle also should’ve had a penalty earlier in the match. Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud both hit the back of the net in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over QPR. Stoke City were 2-0 victors over Everton. After coming off their Capital One Cup Final defeat Tottenham bounced back with a 3-2 victory against Swansea City. Jordan Hendersen scored his second goal in two goals as Liverpool beat Burnley, 2-0. Eden Hazard netted the only goal in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over West Ham United. That’s all for match day 28’s EPL action.
