The Champions League Final is possibly the biggest game in soccer. This year two Spanish teams faced off in thrilling match. It was Atletico Madrid v.s. Real Madrid. The game was off to a great start and Diego Godín opened the scoring for Atletico. Almost the whole rest of the game nothing happened. Atletico was two minutes from being champions of Europe, but Sergio Ramos had to ruin it with a brilliant header into the net to make it 1-1. Then in stoppage time Atletico just fell apart. Real Madrid’s second goal came in the 110 minute when Gareth Bale scored. Then eight minutes later Marcelo scored to make it 3-1 and Cristiano Ronaldo topped everything off with a penalty in the 120th minute. So the final score was 4-1 making it 10 Champions League trophies for Real.
Here is a brief post that shows who was the champion of each league.
Serie a, Juventus
English Premier League, Manchester City
La Liga, Atletico Madrid
Liga Portuguesa, Benfica
Ligue 1, PSG
Bundesliga, Bayern Munich
Scottish Premier League, Celtic
Congratulations to all the Champions and I can’t wait to see who’ll come out on top next season!
As the season comes to a close the games get more and more exciting and this week was definitely no exception. Manchester City dispatched Everton 3-2 with Edin Dzeko scoring a brace, possibly clinching the title. Stewart Downing netted his first goal of the season in West Ham United’s 2-0 win over a struggling Tottenham side. Andreas Weimann starred in Aston Villa’s 3-1 victory against Hull City getting two goals for his team. Ryan Giggs’s second game as manager for Manchester United turned out to be a disaster when he lost 1-0 to Sunderland putting them (Sunderland) one step closer to climbing out of the relegation zone. Cardiff City were hoping for a much needed win against Newcastle, but it turned out to be quite the opposite. Newcastle won 3-0 sealing Cardiff’s departure from the EPL (English Premier League), in other words they’re relegated. Stoke City dominated against Fulham and it showed on the score line with Stoke winning 4-1 and relegating Fulham from the EPL. Southampton grabbed a late winner in the 90th minute against Swansea to win 1-0. Title Contenders Chelsea choked again when thy tied 18th place Norwich City 0-0 putting Chelsea out of the tittle race.Arsenal squeaked by West Brom with an early Olivier Giroud goal in the 14th minute to seal their spot in the Champions League. It was a crazy day Selhurst Park when Liverpool faced Crystal Palace. Liverpool went up 3-0 by the 55th minute, but Crystal Palace came back and scored in the 79th, 81st, and 88th minutes to snatch a point. It’s been a crazy weekend and I’m sure next weekend will be just as good.
This week the semi-finals of the Champions League took place to decide who should face each other in the final. Real Madrid stunned the defending champions, Bayern Munich at home with a 4-0 victory (5-0 aggregate). Sergio Ramos opened the scoring in the 16th minute and scored again four minutes later. Ronaldo who was coming back from an injury netted two goals (34th and 89th minute) to set an all time record for most goals scored in a Champions League season. Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea faced a tough opposition, Atletico Madrid. Chelsea scored first in the 36th minute when Fernando Torres scored. The lead didn’t last though. Adrián netted eight minutes later. From then on everything went downhill for the Blues (Chelsea). Diego Costa scored from the spot in the 60th minute and Arda Turan made it 3-1 in the 72nd. Final score 3-1 (3-1 aggregate also). So, Real Madrid will face their Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid in Lisbon, Portugal (where the final will be hosted) on May 24th.
There are only a few games left in the Premier league season and the title race is going down to the wire. Ryan Giggs, the new Manchester United coach was pleased to see his side win his first game 4-0 against Norwich City with Rooney scoring a brace and putting Norwich in the relegation zone. Everton who are looking for European football traveled to play Southampton. Things didn’t start very well for Everton when Antolín Alcaraz opened the scoring with an own goal in the first minute which was followed up by another own goal by Seamus Coleman in the 31st minute, sealing the victory for Southampton and possibly destroying Everton’s hopes of a spot in the Champions League. Relegation threatened Fulham were hoping to pull themselves out of the drop zone with a win against Hull City. Everything was going according to plan when they took a commanding 2-0 lead by the 58th minute, but Hull City to get a tie whit goals in the 75th and 87th minutes. Not much to say about the Tottenham v.s. Stoke City game other than Danny Rose scored in the 33rd minute to gather three points for Tottenham. Saido Berahino scored the only goal of the West Brom v.s. West Ham game in the 11th minute, giving West Brom three much needed points to stay out of the relegation zone. Manchester City had a fairly easy win against Crystal Palace scoring both of their two goals in the first half. The win means that they’re still in the title race. Arsenal smashed Newcastle 3-0 and it looks like they will hold on to the final Champions League spot. Finally, the best for last. First place Liverpool hosted against second place Chelsea in a thrilling match. The first goal came in the 45th minute when Liverpool’s captain, Steven Gerrard slipped at the back and Demba Ba stole the ball. He then calmly finished to make it 1-0 Chelsea. Then in stoppage time of the 90 minutes when Liverpool were pressing everyone forward trying to score Fernando Torres was played the ball with no one in front of him When he arrived at the goal he passed the ball passed Simon Mignolet to Willian who then walked the ball into an empty net to make it 2-0 Chelsea and pull them just two points behind Liverpool. That’s all there was this week and I can’t wait to see what will happen next week!
